Deciding the Criteria Is Not Enough: Moral Issues to Consider for a Fair Allocation of Scarce ICU Resources

During the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic in Italy, practitioners had to make tragic decisions regarding allocation scarce resources ICU. The Italian debate has paid a lot attention identifying specific regulatory criteria for ICU; this paper, however, we argue that deciding such is not enough implementation fair and transparent allocative decisions. In respect, discuss three ethical issues: (a) context, treating physician, rather than separate committee, was generally one responsible decision; (b) although many guidelines have supported moral equivalence between withholding withdrawing treatments, some health professionals continued consider it morally problematic aspect; (c) workers who aforementioned or even only worked ICU during often experienced distress. We conclude by arguing that, if these problems are directly related above-mentioned issues distributive justice, they can nevertheless affect quality ethics criteria, regardless those chosen.
